It is well known that diet and lifestyle play a crucial role in the management and treatment of chronic disease. It’s been estimated that approximately 20 percent of the population suffers from autoimmune diseases alone and I would say that number is much higher. Diet plays a huge role in how the immune system regulates itself. A Paleo diet is one that eliminates dairy, legumes, sugar and all grains because of their potential to trigger inflammation or disrupt the gut barrier causing gut permeability or “leaky gut”. It includes and focuses on lots of vegetables, nuts and seeds, eggs, healthy fat, fish and seafood and animal protein. So here are 3 reasons I think this diet is so successful in treating chronic disease

  1. It focuses on eating vegetables. This diet eliminates grains which automatically refocuses the patient on vegetables. It emphasises phytochemical dense vegetables (cooked in healthy fat so we can absorb all the nutrients) as being the main ingredient on the plate with meat or seafood as a condiment. There are literally hundreds of studies outlining the health benefits of eating vegetables, so this is always a good idea for just about any health condition. When vegetables are increased you very quickly feel straight up better.
  2. It reduces carbohydrate intake. By eliminating grains and legumes a Paleo diet automatically reduces carbohydrate consumption from processed food and baked goods. It relies on complex carbohydrates from vegetables, root vegetables like sweet potato, squash and beets and nuts and seeds. This is great news for type I and type II diabetics because it reduces the need for insulin and the less insulin needed the less chance for secondary complications. It is also good news for people struggling with obesity and insulin resistance. A low carb diet has also been shown to be beneficial for certain inflammatory conditions as well as neurological conditions.
  3. It eliminates wheat and dairy. The proteins in these two food groups can be big disruptors of the gut lining disrupting tight junctions and triggers antibody production that drives inflammation and improper immune function. That’s why I love this diet for patients with autoimmune diseases like Hashimotos, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s and Colitis, multiple sclerosis and many more. u
